He Comes to Carry Our Government

For a child has been born—for us! . . . He’ll take over the running of the world.

—Isaiah 9:6 MSG

I became a grandma for the first time in 2012, when our daughter gave birth to baby Grey. As you can imagine, I took one look at this baby and I was ruined. Simply put, I was crazy about him. His feet and hands and fingers were lovely and intricate and tiny. All of him was very tiny. And while we found him breathtaking, none of us would have trusted him with the running of the world. We wouldn’t trust him with the running of the coffee pot. He’s way too little—even two years later and bigger—and not at all qualified. The thought of it is absurd.

And yet Isaiah speaks prophetically of a child who would come to shoulder the weight of the government. He tells us that this child will bring restoration and peace in ever-increasing measure. No matter how outlandish the story may have sounded to Isaiah’s listeners, it was true. Jesus came through the womb of a woman to bear our burdens and right our world. Think about this for a moment: the pieces of your life that feel too heavy to carry or conquer are child’s work for our King Jesus. I don’t believe that He came to remove all those weights from our lives, but I know for certain that He came to lift them onto His shoulder so that we would never have to hold them alone. He came wrapped in the perfection of a baby but with the muscles of a superhero, ready to redeem and rescue.

Jesus came to bring the not-yet to our right now, to take our frail and fractured attempts at controlling our own destiny onto His shoulder.
